(Unit 7) Topic 2: Positive Strategies for Classroom Management

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Introduction to Classroom Management

Topic 2 Page 2

Classroom management doesn’t come automatically to each and every teacher of each and every grade or developmental level. In fact, classroom management doesn’t come wrapped up in a neat little guidebook for all educators to follow, either. The term classroom management, refers to the variety of skills and techniques that teachers use to keep students organized, orderly, focused, attentive, on task, and academically productive during a class or program. Early childhood centers, public schools, preschools, and private schools all must make sure to have a classroom management plan in place.

Typically, the lead teacher in each classroom will design, implement, and support the classroom management plan with help from any support staff. This is not always the case, however. Classroom management planning and implementation may also include the director, assistant teachers, and other support staff. Some teachers even include the children in their class in the planning of certain aspects of the management plan!
Like many things in education, there are several factors that influence the best option for your group.

The best route is based upon several factors:

What is best for the children in your program?

Does your classroom management plan support the health, safety, and well-being of the children in your care?
Picture
Does this management plan give you the results that you need?

Is it realistic?
