Objectives:
  • Student will practice acting out and identifying emotions using body language and facial expressions
CDA Competency Standard: ​
II.9.4a
  • Candidate helps children experience sympathy/empathy and respect for others
    • a) Helps children understand their feelings and the feelings of others
Materials: 
  • A favorite book about emotions 
Procedure: 
  1. Read the book to your group and briefly discuss the emotions within the pages as you go. Encourage children, even toddlers, to act out the emotions using body language and facial expressions.
  2. Encourage children to interact with one another appropriately to guess and react to different emotions. Example: if the children act sad guide them in recognizing that emotion and showing appropriate reactions.  
  3. For infants: Read the story and mimic the emotions for the child, telling them what emotion that is. 
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s interactions and emotion identification. Continue to observe and record over time.
