Objectives:
  • Children will carry out small acts of kindness for their peers
  • Children will discuss how these actions made others feel   
CDA Competency Standard: ​
III.9.3a
Candidate promotes children’s sense of belonging in the classroom community.
a)      Encourages children’s social interactions.
Materials: 
  • A Sick Day for Amos McGee by Philip C. Stead and Erin E. Stead 
Procedure: 
  1. Read the book A Sick Day for Amos McGee to your class. After the book is finished discuss how the zookeeper did nice things for the animals in his care and how in turn they came to visit him when he was sick.
  2. Challenge your students to complete as many small acts of kindness for their classmates as they can. Give them examples of small acts of kindness and talk about how they may make their peers feel.    
Assessment: 
  • Observe and assess the children as they complete the challenge. Record your observations and the children’s identification of certain emotions in others.
