Objectives:
  • Children will practice showing sympathy, empathy and respect for others as it relates to friendships 
CDA Competency Standard: ​
11.9.4b
  • Candidate helps children experience sympathy/empathy and respect for others.
B) Discusses diversity comfortably when interacting with children.
Materials: 
  • Book: That's What a Friend Is! by P. K. Hallinan ​
Procedure: 
  1. Read the book That's What a Friend Is! by P. K. Hallinan  to your preschool group, pointing out the positive ways that friends help each other and interact.
  2. Next, invite a child to stand and act out a certain emotion or situation. Encourage another child to react to this child as a friend would, being kind and helpful.
  3. Lastly, explain that these are great ways to practice being a good friend and challenge children to continue to be good friends at recess, lunch, in the classroom and more!
Assessment: 
  • Observe and record the children’s interactions with one another. Record these observations over time. Were they appropriate? Did they improve over time?
