(Unit 7) Topic 6: Bullying Identification: A Developmentally Appropriate Approach

2 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Bullying Prevention, Identification, and Support

Topic 6 Page 15

While you are investigating the behavior through observing and recording, you must ensure that the victim feels safe and supported. Provide positive supports through open communication, increased adult presence, and encouraging positive social interactions between peers.
Just because a bullying incident is identified, investigated, addressed, and may appear to be completed, educators must strive to prevent it from reoccurring. The need for vigilance and a pro-active approach to prevent victims from being re-victimized is always present. This means that bullying prevention, identification, and supports must always be a component of early childhood and school-age programs.
A holistic approach to preventing, identifying, and supporting bullies and victims includes the following elements:
  • Create a classroom culture of respect and empathy
  • Address and redirect any acts of violence or aggression
  • Be open about bullying behaviors
  • Include bullying in conversations and considerations about social interactions
  • Teach the signs and habits of bullying
  • Remain approachable to children and parents
  • Add supports into your activities, curriculum, materials, and habits that support positive interactions and negate bullying types of behaviors
