The Americans with Disabilities Act has three main points that child care centers must be aware of and adhere to.

asic requirements of the ADA from the Child Care and the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA Opportunities and Resources for Child Care Providers and Families, published by the Center for Children with Special Needs and the Washington State Department of Health.

It is likely that a childcare center will already be practicing these guidelines and not even realize it. The most important thing to consider is that you know what a reasonable modification may be for your center. Take the time to analyze the extent your center can go to for accommodations that are not too difficult or expensive. It is equally important to avoid undue burdens and direct threats.
Keywords to Keep in Mind
The following keywords and descriptions come from the Child Care and the Americans with Disabilities Act ADA Opportunities and Resources for Child Care Providers and Families published by the Center for Children with Special Needs and the Washington State Department of Health.
Auxiliary Aids and Services 
Auxiliary aids and services include a range of devices or services that help people communicate. Examples are using sign language, interpreters, large print books, or other communication equipment. Hearing aids are excluded.
Direct Threat
When the child’s condition poses a significant threat to the health or safety of other children or staff this is considered direct threat. Providers must evaluate children on an individual basis and cannot determine risk based upon their own personal assumptions.
Reasonable Modifications 
Changes that can be carried out without much difficulty or expense are considered reasonable modifications. This is individual to each program depending upon nature of the modification, cost and resources of the program. Examples include a change in policy or procedures, removing physical barriers, staff training, providing adaptive equipment.
Undue Burden 
Centers must provide appropriate auxiliary aids and services needed for effective communication with children with disabilities, when doing so would not constitute an undue burden.
