All Aboard: Creating an Inclusive Classroom

3 Clock Hours of Early Childhood Education

Lesson Plan: Pool Noodle Threading

Page 21

Pool Noodle Threading

Age Group:
  • Toddlers
Objectives:
  • Child will be introduced to the concept of threading
  • Child will develop fine motor skills
  • Child will practice hand-eye coordination and control
CDA Competency Standard:
II.4.3b
Candidate’s facilitation promotes children’s physical development
  • b) Guides the development of children’s fine and gross motor skills
Materials:
  • Pool noodle
  • Knife
  • String
  • Clothespin
Procedure:
  1. Prepare for the activity by cutting the pool noddle into one inch pieces. These will act as your “beads” when threading.
  2. Take the clothespin and wrap the string around it several times. Secure with a few knots.
  3. Show the child how to thread by taking the clothespin and pushing it though the hole in each pool noodle bead.
  4. Encourage them to try it themselves! Remember, practice makes perfect. This is an introductory activity, so you will want to give them plenty of opportunities to practice.
Assessment:
  • Take anecdotal notes on the child’s fine motor development. Were they successful in threading the pool noodle bead?

How could you adjust this lesson plan to fit the needs of a child with fine motor skill delays?

Possible Answer:

You could make necklaces or a “snake” that slithers on the floor using the threaded pool noodles.
