Kids and Outdoor Play: Tips for Parents

Topic 4 Page 5

For many families the day begins by getting sleepy children out of bed, dressing them and sometimes preparing breakfast. The children are placed in their car seats, driven to childcare, dropped off and parents hurry off to work or school. Parents arrive at the child care facility in the late afternoon. They gather their cherubs and whisk them home; unless they drive through a fast food restaurant to pick up dinner on the way. Once home its dinner, baths, and bedtime. Weekends are not much better. There can be laundry, bills, household cleaning, and errands. Parents collapse on the couch and watch TV, play video games and browse the internet.
For children a little older there are dance lessons, swim lessons, team sports, and church or other community based activities. This fast pace does not leave much room for spending quality time at a park or taking a leisurely walk in the woods. Most parents and children are exhausted by this fast paced lifestyle. For single parent households the stress doubles.
There is a resurgence in many homes to stop the mad dash, and live a simpler life. It takes work to change a lifestyle and intentionally spend time with the family in a natural setting. Even if it is just to take a walk after dinner, take a bike ride on a weekend, or start a garden.
