Snow Dough

Age Group:
  • Toddlers
  • Preschoolers
Objectives:
  • Child will practice creating with new materials
  • Child will increase sensory motor skill
CDA Competency Standard:
II.4.3a
  • Activities and materials encourage children to develop their senses
a) Sight, sound, smell, taste and touch experiences are encouraged through a variety of developmentally appropriate materials and activities
Materials:
  • Hoola hoop
  • different colored streamers
  • scissors
Procedure:
  • Prepare for activity by making the dough. Combine 8 cups flour with 1 cup of baby oil. Add a few tablespoons of glitter and mix. Put your snow dough in the large bin and present it to the child in an appropriate area.

Note:  Please provide appropriate supervision to the children in your care when completing all activities. You will need to decide what types of activities are safe for the children in your care.  Appropriate and reasonable caution should be used when providing art and sensory experiences for children.  Toddlers require special caution, only use non-toxic materials, and do not allow toddlers to put things in their mouths that are a choking hazard.

Assessment:
  • Observe and record child as they are playing. How did they react to the new material? What did they do with the dough? Did they pile it up or let it fall from their hands? Be sure to take pictures during the activity, make anecdotal notes, and put them both in the child’s portfolio.
